Developer Productivity: DORA Metrics, SPACE, DevEx
Episode participants
What we discussed on the recording
Alexander Polomodov and Artem Aryutkin discuss developer productivity through DORA, SPACE, and DevEx. They separate effectiveness from visible activity and limit the scope to engineering delivery. Even delivery time requires agreement on its start, end, and context, while a useful metric must answer a concrete problem.
DORA provides delivery and reliability signals. SPACE adds five dimensions at individual, team, and system levels: satisfaction and well-being, performance, activity, communication and collaboration, and efficiency and flow. These data can help engineers and the system, but turning them into a ranking creates the wrong incentives.
DevEx shifts attention to developer perception because company logs are hard to standardize. Surveys scale but do not replace telemetry. The hosts examine flow, cognitive load, feedback loops, and build latency, then connect responses with real scenarios and stages of goal completion.
Platform practice still faces a conflict between freedom and standardization. Voluntary adoption preserves local optimization, while one platform enables scale, easier rotation, and shared tooling. Evaluation should connect process, code, product, and user outcomes; pairing with a newcomer can still reveal what a dashboard misses.
