The review of this talk begins in the first post. Here I also want to cover regular developer surveys, which help teams understand how people feel about different aspects of their work. The results identify areas for improvement and give the team something concrete to discuss. At Atlassian, teams use 10% of their time to fix problems and improve developer productivity. Some run a “week of developer joy”; others plan productivity improvements into their sprints. Teams also share what they learn. For example, one team wrote a blog post explaining its solution and how other teams could use it.

The speaker closes with three points:

  • Measurements and survey results can help identify what would improve developers’ work and help them make progress.
  • Autonomous teams can improve the quality and value they deliver to their company and its customers.
  • It matters that people enjoy their work and build things customers can actually use.
