IC Track: Grow by Scope, Not Headcount

Alexander Chernikov grew up in Kaluga and saw Hackers at age ten, before he owned a computer. Curiosity led him to the Kaluga branch of Bauman University. The university mainly built communication skills, and after graduation he had to choose between Muay Thai, esports, and an engineering career.

Alexander moved from PHP to Python and joined a contextual advertising platform. With almost no individual-contributor ladder, growth meant becoming a team lead. The cost was real: coding remained while hiring, process design, responsibility for people, and the risk of losing a team were added on top.

A startup and a cryptocurrency exchange took Alexander to Ozon and then Wildberries. The private-cloud idea closed, but the seller portal remained: a .NET monolith was split into Go services while an engineering culture was built. At Yandex he reshaped Foodfox and launched Yandex Check as an internal startup.

At T-Investments Alexander returned to engineering in a horizontal Staff+ role. He connects domains across major architecture changes, frames technical projects through measurable business value, and shapes engineering culture. His advice is to leave the comfort zone deliberately and manage time as a scarce resource.
