Piter Publishing Sale (Category Sales)
Piter is having another sale, with 40% off print books and 50% off ebooks. Enter the promo code "Бумажная" at checkout, or "Электронная" for ebooks. I already bought a stack of books in previous sales and may pick up a few more, but I have managed to read quite a few since the last sale.
Books I have already read
- Data Mesh in Action — I read this since the last sale and have already written about it. Before that, I read parts of Data Mesh: Delivering Data-Driven Value at Scale.
- Grokking Artificial Intelligence Algorithms — I read this recently; here is my post about it.
- The Real CTO: Think Like a Chief Technology Officer — I read it, wrote about it, and then recorded a podcast discussion with Sasha Shevchenko.
- Grokking Continuous Delivery — an interesting, accessible book about CI/CD by a Google engineer. I have read it and written about it.
- API Design Patterns — I started reading it and shared some thoughts. I also read the author’s whitepapers on API governance at Google; a brief account is here.
- Clean Python: Programming Tricks for Professionals — I decided to brush up on Python theory.
- Computer Networks: Principles, Technologies and Protocols, revised anniversary edition — I read the Olifers’ book years ago and thought it was fine. I have now read 150 pages of the new edition and can say it has not got worse :)
- Game Design: How Games Are Made — I had already read and written quite a bit about game design (1, 2, 3). Now I have read this book too and written about it.
- Developing Apps with GPT-4 and ChatGPT — an introductory book about ChatGPT that I have read and discussed here.
- The Mythical Man-Month — Frederick Brooks’s classic, which celebrates an anniversary next year. I have written about it before.
- Database Internals, Russian edition — Alex Petrov’s book was ~~born as~~ originally titled Database Internals in English. I have written quite a lot about it (1 and 2), and we discussed it on the Code of Architecture podcast.
- Building Secure and Reliable Systems — I read this in the original English and have already written about it.
Books I still have to read
- README: The Harsh Realities of Software Development — a book about developers’ everyday work and engineering practices.
- Software: Mistakes and Trade-offs in Software Development — the second chapter, “Code Duplication Is Not Always Bad,” won me over.
- Grokking Functional Programming — I would like an accessible read about functional programming.
- Design for Developers — I read plenty of design books aimed at designers (1, 2, 3); here I want to see how it is presented to developers.
- The Software Engineering Manager’s Career — while working on a book about engineering management, it is useful to study other sources.
- The Product Manager’s Career — product thinking is useful for engineers and technical leaders, especially outside a software sweatshop. I have written about books on this subject: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
- Systems Performance — an interesting book about performance by Brendan Gregg, an excellent expert who also did a great deal to advance eBPF. You can learn more in this documentary.
- The Creative Programmer — I decided to explore creative methods that might help solve engineering problems.
- Advanced Algorithms and Data Structures — essential algorithms for difficult programming problems in data analysis, machine learning and graphs. I want to improve my knowledge of algorithms.
