Facility 4 - Lesson. 14 "The manuscript is ready. What's next? Expert - Svetlana Motylkova (Category Writing)
Interesting lesson about working with publishers. This is especially true for those who would like to see their book published:) The main thoughts I learned from this lesson are the following:
- It’s important to look at your book through the eyes of a publisher who sees the book as a product he plans to make money from.
- Publishers differ from each other - they have different assortment, average prices and circulation of books.
- Now there are many materials about the publishing house, including reviews of authors and employees.
- The book market has an interesting structure: large publishers (EXMO-ASTA)Independent publishers, online stores (Labyrinth)Marketplaces, ..., samizdat, printing houses, literary agents, authors and readers
- When choosing a publisher, it is important to study the book market and relate the theme of the book to goals and values, and then send the manuscript to those publishers that meet these criteria. Well, it would be good for the publisher to specialize in the topic to which the book relates.
- Literary agents exist, but their usefulness has not yet been scientifically proven:)
- Publishing application is the clothing on which a new book is met in the publishing house. It is important with this application to "sell" the book to the editor and explain its competitive advantages, where you can mention the importance of the topic, the relevance of the genre, the high expertise of the author, the correspondence of the book to the portfolio of the editor and publisher.
- The success of the application is increased by matching the topic to the focus of the publishing house, getting into a series of books, the possibility of promoting the book.
- The application includes the main points: genre, theme, target audience, analogues, volume, illustrations, structure.
- When analyzing the market, it is important to find analogues and show the difference from them. (but without criticism of bestsellers)
- You can make a plan to promote the book - it can increase the chances
- In Russia, there is a presumption of authorship and it is not required to register a book in your name:)
- The application should include a synapse - a detailed plan of the book, including information about the author, a list of chapters, a summary of each chapter and a conclusion. For the artist, the synapse is a brief retelling of the whole book.
- The application must be written clearly, competently and in accordance with the rules of the publisher where the book is sent.
- If we receive silence in response to the application, it is a refusal. (Especially if more than a few months have passed.)
- One of the options for responding to the application is a feedback that you need to finalize the application and the manuscript itself.
- Publishers prefer to receive exclusive rights to books - with such a contract, all the rights to publish the book from the publisher and the author cannot publish it elsewhere. (usually 5 years)
- If desired, the book can be published under pseudonyms:)
- Responsibility for the content of the book is the responsibility of the publisher, so he can insist on the exclusion of some content.
- Sometimes publishers can go back to old authors’ applications, but this is not accurate.
