Another lesson from the course of book writing and book publishing from MIF was devoted to copyright and contract with the publishing house. These are very important topics for authors, since it is the contract that determines the terms of the relationship. I wonder what in 15 lessonConversion of the manuscript into publicationThere were already a lot of details about copyrights and the specifics of contracts, so I didn't take much from this lesson.

  1. Copyright arises at the time of creation of the work, but an act of acceptance and transfer is required to protect the rights.
  2. Copyright is valid throughout the life of the author and 70 years after death
  3. The author can fix his rights to the work using various methods, including the Russian copyright society, the depositary or notary.
  4. The contract between the author and the publisher is an integral part of the interaction and should be beneficial to both parties.
  5. The author can negotiate the details of the contract (percentage of royalties, availability of advance, exclusivity of the contract)But a lot depends on the profitability of the project for the publisher.
  6. The use of other people’s works without the consent of the authors and copyright holders is prohibited, but citation with the name of the author and the source of borrowing is allowed. (The size of an acceptable quote depends on the context and is not in stone.)
  7. The publisher and the author can agree on the timing and scope of editing and proofreading, but the design of the work is usually chosen by the publisher.
