Facility 4 - Lesson. 17 "Book design." Expert - Jana Palamarchuk (Category Writing)
Another lesson from the book writing and publishing course from MIF was led by Yana Palamarchuk, creative director at MIF, who told about the design of books. This was an interesting lesson, as it is often the design of a book that serves as the clothes on which our book is greeted. If it is good, then you decide to look inside the book and look at its contents, that is, good design expands the funnel of customers:) Well, I actually like the theme of design, so I watched the lesson carefully and made the following thoughts for myself.
- Cover design is very important to attract the attention of the audience and convey the atmosphere.
- The main elements of the cover: idea, plot, metaphor and atmosphere
- All elements depend heavily on which part of the reader pyramid we aim at. (More about the audience and the pyramid second lesson)
- To assess the quality of the cover, you need to look at the characteristics: Genre recognition - the cover should fit into genre norms Image clarity - the cover should be clear and easy to read. Reflect the meaning of the book - the cover should reflect the key themes and mood of the book. Competitive design – the cover should be modern and reflect trends.
- There are separate criteria for assessing the quality of the cover design Readability of the name - the name should be easy to read and understand. Hierarchy of composition - the cover should be clear what is important and what is secondary. Balance of composition – the cover should be balanced and not overloaded.
- Covers are different: font with text and background, font with a small graphic image, cover, built on the photo
- When working with a designer, it is important to describe in detail the book itself and the target audience so that he can come up with the right design.
- It can be effective to use design references: examples of books close in style, content, design or idea. There can be a good discussion with the designer about what your book should look like.
- Design is a fickle thing, so the covers of old books can look outdated. Accordingly, when designing a cover, it is necessary to take into account modern trends in this matter, with which good designers are familiar.
- In general, the author of the book needs to make sure that the designer is a cool specialist, load it with context, and then discuss the options for the cover, trusting the designer’s experience.
