Another lesson from the course of book writing and book publishing from MIF was led by Evgeny Selivanov, who has extensive experience in marketing and promoting books. Evgeny launched the Litres Samizdat platform and brought it to the market leaders. I remember the following points from this lecture:

  1. For successful promotion, you need to use a marketing mix or 4P: product, place, price, promotion.
  2. A book needs to be turned into a product – it’s not just text, it’s a physical artifact that can be presented as a print edition, pdf version or audio file. This is a complex process that has been studied in previous lessons in more detail.
  3. Access to a book should depend on the genre and audience and can be both paid and free. (If we want self-promotion, not to make money on a particular book)
  4. Book promotion is a very important factor, it includes choosing the right price range and using free ways to attract attention.
  5. The book can be published in a publishing house or on a samizdat platform - now it can also be profitable.
  6. To promote the book, you can use different tools: social networks, discounts, advertising tools on the sites where the book is published, as well as targeted advertising.
  7. For promotion, you can use the services of professionals - inside the publishing house, if the book is published in it, or freelancers, if it is samizdat.
  8. A good advertising company often has positive post-effects and creates a springboard effect when it attracts an audience and after the end.
  9. It is desirable for an author to collect a fanbase and be able to sell himself and his books - this is a key success factor for writers.
  10. There is no universal recipe for success, but if you know your audience and be able to communicate with them, the chances of success increase.
  11. Illustrations and good layout can add value to a book
  12. There are a whole group of samizdat platforms that you can try instead of submitting a book to a publisher.
  13. When promoting a book, you can use all the same advertising tools and analytics on them. (craze)This is also used to promote other products.
